What are you watching?

Postby CheMateo » Wed Jan 23, 2008 9:58 am

Just wondering what particular shows people here may be watching on TV or DVD. I don't have TIVO so I usually catch up on a few shows through DVD. Right now my favorite shows that I watch, either on DVD or TV are

The Wire and The Shield. Both shows are coming to an end sadly. The Wire is currently in it's fifth and final season. While the Shield will air it's seventh and final season this Spring.

I had heard good things about It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia. I watched the first two seasons on DVD and it made me a fan!

Any other shows people want to talk about or recommend?

Battlestar Galactica

And I'm not talking about the 1978 Glen A. Larson attempt to capitalize on the popularity of Star Wars, featuring Lorne Greene from Bonanza, and Dirk Benedict who went on to star in The A-Team. I'm talking about the genius re-envisioning of the 1978 concept.

The human race went to war with a race of machines called Cylons that were originally built to make their lives easier for mankind. After years of war an armistice was declared, and the Cylons set off to settle their own homeworld. 40 years go by without hearing from the Cylons until one day they come back, and launch an all out nuclear attack that kills 18 billion people. The only survivors (about 50,000) were those fortunate enough to be travelling on ships between worlds at the time of the attack (i.e. cargo, prison, passanger, refinery ships, etc...). It sets up an incredible dynamic of reorganizing human civilization, reshaping laws, etc... For example abortion is made illegal because it runs contrary to the human races' need to survive beyond it's current generation. Mary McDonnell's character is the Secretary of Education, but because she is the highest ranking government official to survive the attack she is declared President. The Cylons have also "evolved" through engineering to take on Human forms and can download their conciousness into a new body upon death, so this presents issues of suicide bombing, and prisoner abuse/torture in a completely unique light.

It's an incredible cast, with a level of social commentary that few shows ever come close to even attempting, and that's a reason the show was honored with a Peabody award. And those are usually reserved for journalistic programs as opposed to fictitious ones.

I'm bummed that the show is ending with the coming season, but I still can't wait to see those final episodes starting in July.

This is by far the best show on television, and I make no exaggerations about that.

Jericho

Jericho is a show about a small Kansas town that copes with the problems stemming from an all out nuclear attack on the U.S. The town of Jericho is fortunate enough to be far enough away from the more immediate dangers, so over the course of the show you see the dangers and predicaments slowly grow in severity & frequency compared to other towns we see in the show. Problems such as food shortages, lack of medicine & doctors, being unable to support refugees, rogue gov't security contractors & bandits, etc... All of this combined with the conspiracy that led to the attack, and the conspiracy to cover it up. Plus the first season builds to a war between Jericho and the neighboring town of Mintern over Jericho's farmland.

The show was cancelled by CBS, but a huge campaign from the show's fanbase forced the network to bring the show back for an additional 7 episodes to close out the "war" storyline. Two endings were shot. If the 7 episodes do good ratings the show will go on. If not, they'll go with an ending that gives closure to the show. The new episodes are going to air soon.

Entourage

Come on... do I really need to explain why this show is awesome?

"We got kicked out of the hotel because Anthony Michael Hall was pissing off the balcony." LMAO!

30 Rock

I have to agree with Lunchbox on 30 Rock. This show is one of the funniest network comedies I have ever seen. Tina Fey & Alec Baldwin are genius in their performences. The humor is a blend of SNL, and the absurdity of the comedy from shows like Malcom In The Middle.

If you're not hooked by the pilot episode's parody of Martin Lawerence's underwear freakout done by Tracy Morgan's character Tracy Jordan then you have no soul. Does anyone remember Martin Lawerence drugged out of his mind, in his underwear, waving a gun around at an intersection back in 1994? 30 Rock has that, but instead of a gun, it's a lightsaber & Tracy Morgan is yelling "I'm a jedi."

On the DVD front there are three great HBO series; two of which ended way too soon. Those two shows being Carnivale' and Deadwood. The other being Rome

I don't know why I said July, but the new BSG episodes are actually in March.

On the subject of Prison Break, that's the one show that I've been meaning to get caught up on, as I've only seen about 15 minutes of a single episode.

This past year I got caught up on Heroes, and Lost, but Prison Break is next on my list.

Have the last few season of Curb been really good? I really enjoyed the "pilot" and the first two season. But I really hated the third season. I found it very unfunny and contrived. Watching the entire third season was a chore. I gave up on the show after that.

Season four was really funny stuff. Don't think I've seen much, if any of season five, and I don't have HBO anymore, so I haven't seen six.

It's only been off air since the fall started, and HBO shows are usually off air for nine months to a year before the new season of a show will start because HBO likes to rotate their original shows and always have something new every week.

The last year and a half for Entourage was unusual. They split the 3rd season into two parts. The first part aired in the fall of '06, and the second part aired at the end of spring/beginning of summer. At that point Entourage should've been off for a while, but because they split the season that gave them time to get to work on the 4th season. So they decided to split season 4 as well, and air the first half of season 4 immediately after the second half of season 3 finished airing. That way they had Entourage all summer. The end of season 3 was actually the episode where they filmed Medillin. So the second half of season 4 has been in production since the spring time I believe. They'll probably start airing new episodes sometime between March (when the current block of HBO shows with new episodes will finish airing), and May or June.

Allegedly that remaining half of season 4 might be the end, but they may continue it into a 5th season.

I wouldn't be surprised if the show ends with the guys losing everything, and either going home or trying to work their way back up from the bottom all over again.

Do you mean storywise in terms of his success, or continue with his own spin-off?

technically, Johnny Drama has a hot French girlfriend and a successful TV series, so I'd say Drama is doing better towards the end of the season

Although that could all change. But it would be kind of interesting to see Johnny's career finally get back on top while Vince walks away from it all.

Or maybe Vince will go flip out and check himself into a psychiatric institution in South Africa, or he'll shave his head and start dating a member of the paparazzo.

The most appropriate way for Entourage to come to an end would be for Vince to commit suicide, causing Eric to go back to New York and manage a Sbarroo pizzeria while Drama becomes a huge star as a result and stays in LA with Turtle and becomes Ari's biggest client. It'd make for a perfect spin off series. Plus it'd get rid of Kevin Connolly, who is either the most unlikable dude on TV or does a great job at playing the most unlikable character on TV.
