California Fires

Postby CheMateo » Tue Oct 23, 2007 11:48 am

These fires have been raging on but I haven't really thought about it too much. But today from South Pas you could tell it's getting really bad. At around 10 this morning the sky was hazy and it looked like it was much later in the day, as if it was late afternoon.

It's pretty sad. I was reading on BBC that 250,000 people have been evacuated. A state of emergency has been declared in California. 655 homes have been destroyed while thousands more are in danger.

I was wondering if anyone in San Diego or closer to any of the fires are having trouble breathing, if there is ash in the air or any other issues.

Well, I heard some updated figures this morning. In San Diego alone over 1000 structures (homes, mobile homes, etc...) have been destroyed, and now 1/3 of a million people have been evacuated.

I live pretty close to the Santiago/Silverado Canyon fire that was an act of arson set at 3 spots along the 241 toll road. Back in February on the 241 a car fire that was intentionally set to destroy evidence of a crime started a fire that came within a half mile of my neighborhood. The current Santiago fire is luckily further south of my area, so it doesn't look like I'm in it's path this time. However a number of my friends have had to be evacuated, but luckily their homes appear to be safe.

The college I attend is Santiago Canyon College so I can attest to the level of smoke and ash in the air. It's not too bad, and was a lot worse back in February when the fire was literally across the street, and several times before over the past 4 years.

Also on the way home from Vegas on Sunday (from the ROH show) I had to drive through the small fire that had just started at the bottom of the Cajon Pass at the 15/215 interchange. The northbound was closed, and luckily for us the soutbound 15 was not yet closed. The fire was scattered over a square mile or two and we had to drive through a pretty thick cloud of smoke. About a mile down the road a house, or barn was burning just off the road, and another mile down the road there was a big rig on the side of the road that apparently had caught some embers while driving through the pass and the entire cab had been burned down to the chasis.

That's been the extent of my personal experience with the fires, but I as well would like to hear from anyone who is in the Newhall, Santa Clarita, Malibu, San Diego, Lake Arrowhead, etc... areas.

Living in Chula Vista, the Harris Fire threatened my neighborhood the worse. On Monday night, I tried to go to sleep only to see an orange glow. I opened the blinds and saw Mt. Miguel on fire. Where I lived wasn't that far from there, so I was seriously debating whether or not to evac right away. Fortunately, the costal winds came in early and it helped in calming the fire before it could actually touch my neighborhood. The occasional ash gets in the way now and then, but nothing too serious on our end. We got lucky.

That's good to hear. Hope your neighborhood stays safe.

I just heard yesterday that some of my family's long time friends lost their house in Arrowhead, and my uncle who isn't too sharp is about 1.5 miles from that fire. I hope he knows when to pack up and get the hell out.

Monrovia is bad too, ashes and the air is bad, just walking to the corner makes your chest hurt.

Surgical masks and goggles. I had to use them in the 2003 fires.

I live very close to where the Canyon Country fire (the Buckweed fire) was, and my family and I were evacuated Sunday night approx. 7:30pm, but were allowed to go home by Monday afternoon.

The smoke on Sunday was horrendous, not to mention the extremely high winds were blowing ash and shit all over the neighborhood.

Everyone please do me a favor and say a prayer for those in my neck of the woods and everyone around SoCal that lost their homes or were hospitalized.

I hope everyone is okay and has not fallen victim to the fires. On my way home from Speed of Sound, I could see the fires and they looked like rivers of fire coming down the mountain. In the last few days it has gotten worse. Sometimes it looks like a volcano has exploded and thick clouds of smoke are coming from the mountains. During the day there has been redish/orange tint to the daylight and my car was covered in ashes. The air quality has been bad too. I'm surprised to see people still jogging and running when the air quality is so bad.

So far I have heard that fifty three homes have been destroyed by the fires and another 12,000 are in danger. Unfortunately two firemen have already died. Capt. Tedmund Hall, 47, and firefighter Specialist Arnaldo "Arnie" Qui
