Battle of The Bonds and Casino Royale

Postby CheMateo » Sat Dec 09, 2006 9:51 am

I watched Casino Royale a few weeks ago and was wondering if anyone else saw it and what they thought. I liked it and was happy to see the franchise move away from the stale formula that was present in the Brosnan era. I also thought Craig did a decent job. Although I wasn't happy when he was chosen. I was hoping the role would have gone to Clive Owen or Dominic West.

Any way what are your thoughts and who is your favorite actor to play James Bond? Mine personally isn't too popular it seems with the casual movie goer. My choice would be Timothy Dalton. Due to his commitment to the role and moving away from the overt humor of Moore and being authentic to Fleming's material. I think that if Dalton was young enough and started with Casino Royale he would be remembered more fondly.

Connery was good but started phoning it in after Goldfinger.

Ughhhh... Dalton? I can't agree on that one. He was too macarbe, and lacked a lot of charisma & personality in my view. And I think that Connery's "phoning it in" didn't come until You Only Live Twice. Although that movie had one of the most hilarious Bond scenes ever. Rocket Cigarettes. "This cigarette can save your life." "You sound like one of the commercials."

Although I do agree that Brosnan was getting stale. It aimed for too much of an over the top, action oriented angle. I'll never forgive them for making Die Another Day. The screwed up thing is that they based the screenplay off the Moonraker novel. Why the hell would they want to adapt a Bond movie from a bad Bond book that was already adapted into a bad Bond movie? Doesn't make sense.

I'm thrilled that Casino Royale finally made it to the screen though. And while I wasn't as enthused about Craig in the beginning I changed my mind once seeing him in Layer Cake & in Munich.

I think its too early to say he may the best or my favorite, but I do think he's up there. In the mean time I'm a loyal Connery fan. I mean, he is the king of Celebrity Jeopardy after all. Buckfutter!!!

Ha, your answer doesn't surprise me. I still think he was good, dark and serious. I don't think he lacked charisma at all. I've heard that before but I just don't see that at all. It was a welcomed change to me as the Moore era became too much of a joke and relying on gadgets. Because the Moore era got so far fetched is hasn't aged the best and allowed for the franchise to be made fun of too much(Austin Powers).

The reason I feel that it came after Goldfinger was because it was on the set of Goldfinger where he started throwing his tantrums and hating the role that made him famous. I recall a story where he walked off the set for a few days until Cubby and Saltzman agreed to give him a raise in pay. Then it was also like he started to go in his second phase of awkward puberty, where he was starting to bald and get a paunch around his stomach. Although thats more noticable in Diamonds Are Forever. But it seems after Goldfing, to me at least, Connery hated the role and was just doing it for the money and because everything else at the time he was doing wasn't so successful. All the passion he had in Dr. No, FRWL and GF seemed gone.

Yeah I was tired of Pierce and the movies they were making. I'm glad they made the abrupt change. I didn't know DAD was lifted from Moonraker. They were just going way too far out with the cgi.

Layer Cake and Munich for some reason never really changed my opinion of Craig. I thought he was still weird looking and was upset at the choice. However after seeing CR I changed my mind and thought he was decent to good. Although in a couple shots I still thought he looked weird.

Curbstomp, which actor were you hoping to replace Brosnan?

Well there were a whole slew of candidates. Eric Bana said he didn't want the role because he thought Bond was a "silly" character. Hugh Jackman as it turned out was spreading rumors that he was being considered because he said he just wanted to see if anyone would take them seriously. Clive Owen & Gerard Butler would've been interesting, but something about them presents a little bit too machismo for the role. Jude Law never seemed like a fit to me. Colin Salmon (the black guy from the Brosnan Bond's & the guy in Resident Evil who gets sliced up by the lasers) was actually considered for a while, and despite his minimal film roles I thought he had potential & a black Bond certainly would've been interesting. Rupert Everett & his quest to be the first ever gay James Bond just made my stomach churn. I don't care if a gay actor is playing him, or if they want to make Bond more progressive in a P.C. way, but making Bond gay would've totally underminded the character.

Personally I would've gone with Bana if he would've considered it, otherwise Owen or Salmon.

I have a soft spot for Moore, if only for the fact that his were the first Bond movies I saw. To this day, even thought I know intellectually that Moonraker and View To A Kill aren't great movies, they're still my favorites.

Plus VTaK had that awesome Duran Duran theme song, and the music video where they blow up the Eiffel Tower or whatever.

Interesting choices. I like many people championed Owen as well. I even remember Benicio Del Toro saying that he was using up his past Bond connections to champion Owen to Barbara Broccoli. But alas it didn't happen for whatever reason.

I never got the impression that Bana was even being considered. He seemed to flat out deny he was involved in any talks.

My only problem with Salmon was that he was just recently in the movies as a fellow MI6 agent. So it would seem weird seeing him play Bond now. At least Joe Don Baker had a 8 year hiatus before appearing as another character in a James Bond movie.

Gerard Butler, the name rings a bell but I can't put a face to the name. What would I've seen him in?

Any opinion on Goran Visnjic? I know he was in the running and was well liked by Martin Campbell. I thought he had the look but wasn't sure if he could get rid of that Croatian accent. I think he was somebody I had in the back of my mind if it didn't go to some of my first choices.

By the way what do you think of Henry Cavill? Cavill played Guy Pearce's son in the Count of Monte Cristo. He was supposedly one of the final two contenders for the role along with Craig obviously. But they said they turned him down because he was too young. I thought he was a waste of time as he came off too weeny like in the movie but who knows.

Yeah the theme song was pretty cool. I don't hate Moore as some people I know. They were fun for what they were but they got a bit out of hand(i.e. Moonraker). Sadly Moore also stayed around a little too long, he was way too old to be doing Bond by time the 80's rolled around. If you watch Live and Let Die all the way to AVTAK you see him age from a man to grandpa. And it is creepy to see him bedhopping with young women.

By the way did anybody ever hear the story about For Your Eyes Only and the Bond girl/man? Funny.

Dalton, I haven't seen Daniel Craig yet, but Dalton was absolutely pimp. He was the most realistic Bond. I know Bond kinda aims to be family oriented action, but I'm a grown ass man I like my action to be a little more risque.

Family oriented!? Are you fucking nuts!?

Bond is a chauvanistic, womanizing, alcoholic, assassin who gets his no-no parts tortured with a carpet beater. JFK took a significant amount of flack from the right wing bible thumpers when he mentioned in a speech that he loves to read James Bond novels.

Bond is not family oriented. Maybe with some of the crap that's come out in recent years, but Bond at the core is not a character for grandma or the 2.3 children who aren't even out of the 3rd grade yet.

As someone who is obsessed with all things Bond...

...my answer was Sean Connery, though in hindsight, I'd have picked Roger Moore. The only "bad" Bond in my mind was Lazenby, though I haven't seen Craig yet. Lazenby was plagued by shitty little decisions...like him wearing a kilt...and the fucking pirate shirt. God, it made me sick. I really did enjoy him at the end of the movie when Tracy was killed, however.

If any of you haven't gotten any of the ultimate editions yet, get them all...though volume 3 is by far the best. Goldeneye, On Her Majesty's Secret Service, From Russia With Love, For Your Eyes Only, and my favorite Bond movie, Live and Let Die.
